I just wanted to run away, and I had no idea what awaited me on the other end of it all. On my final day, I had to confess to my then-wife that everything was gone, and I sat at the airport waiting for a flight east to my family. The terror was something I only wish nobody ever had to go through. I spent four days lying, saying I had the flu, when in fact I was on a bender. My life had become one big lie, as I’d been hiding the extent of my problems from everyone close to me. I couldn’t stop drinking, and I couldn’t get enough booze in me to kill the pain anymore. I had lost it all – there was no money left of my own and barely any left to take. I discovered gambling along the way which undoubtedly sped my decline, as I eventually began embezzling money from my employer in order to get what I needed – my fix. What had started as nightly ritual of a few beers turned into, by the end, straight maintenance drinking, waking up to several shots of whiskey in my coffee, drinking beer all day and ending with more hard alcohol and marijuana at night. I ended up drinking two days early, and that set off a decade long journey that eventually brought me to a point where I feared living more than dying. So I swore I’d try a drink on my 21st birthday. It last 5 1/2 years, but truthfully, I never got truly honest with myself, and was only riddled with jealousy that, for my remaining high school years and the first three years of college, other young people could drink and I couldn’t. By 15, I found myself embarking on an initial journey into recovery. I’d shoplift booze from the local convenience store, hide it from my family and drinking alone became my regular getaway. But the thoughts of drinking and escaping never left my mind, and it became an obsession. It made the bad times tolerable, and the good times even better. It gave me all the confidence I’d never had. The taunts of kids in schools would grate on me day in and day out, but the moment I found alcohol, all of that changed. I was a kid who never felt like I fit in anywhere, and I struggled with anxiety and feelings of loneliness. I began drinking at an early age, taking my first drank around 7, and my drinking became regular by my early teenage years. The filmmakers, at first, take their time getting to the spooky stuff, reveling in midcentury American suburbia in autumn and the circumstances of its characters. Then, usually at night, a new story scrawls itself in the book, and the frights begin, often nearing their climaxes with extended stretches of tension-ratcheting silence. During the day, Stella and her friends run around town, looking for explanations for what’s happening: from microfilm at the library, the records room in an abandoned sub-basement of a hospital, or the Bellows’ former maid’s now-elderly daughter. Soon, new ones begin to be written as if by magic-and in fresh blood!-targeting the kids with death by monsters from American folk tales.Īs in 2015’s Goosebumps and its 2018 Halloween-themed sequel-both adapted from another keystone in millennial literary horror nostalgia-the source material itself is a central plot device in Scary Stories. These outsiders stumble upon her secret room and then her secret book of stories, which Stella takes. Fleeing bullies while the townsfolk trick-or-treat, they meet Ramón (Michael Garza), the new kid in town, and show him a haunted 19th-century mansion, shrouded in fog and bathed in moonlight, where the supposedly kid-killing Sarah Bellows once lived, whispering scary stories through its walls to children. In this modern-seeming milieu lives Stella (Zoe Margaret Colletti), a pubescent misfit with a few similarly uncool guy friends. Instead, the film’s time period is established by presidential candidate Richard Nixon’s frequent appearance on television screens and repeated reminders of the conflict in Southeast Asia. Though set in 1968, from Halloween to Election Day, Scary Stories avoids flower-power signifiers. Screenwriters Dan and Kevin Hageman haven’t adapted the omnibus source material as a horror anthology, instead incorporating a selection of the books’ hair-raisers as set pieces within a larger narrative about the power of storytelling and the Vietnam War. This film adaptation retains the archetypal settings-here bundled into a semirural mill town in Pennsylvania-but opens up the emotional and psychological lives of its heroes and villains. Alvin Schwartz’s Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark books are full of horror stories taken from folklore and presented like fairy tales-just a few short pages of action, populated with stock characters stripped of inner lives, set in nondescript American Anytowns. It’s free to scan your drive with Disk Drill, but you’ll need to upgrade for $89 before you can restore data. On the plus side, the software is easy to use, and you can preview photos and videos before restoring files. For most users, this is more than enough support, but Disk Drill may not work if you need to recover very unique data. The software only supports FAT32, NTFS, HFS+, and EXT4 file systems, and it’s limited to detecting around 200 file types. The drawback to Disk Drill is that it doesn’t offer the same breadth of support for data recovery as other software we reviewed. It’s a great option if you’re just diving into data protection and want an all-in-one solution for backing up and recovering data. In some states, such as California, you must obtain a builder's permit before any demolition or significant remodeling can start in your bathroom. They can often help get a unifying look while remodeling a small bathroom on a budget. If you're unsure what to do with the second bath, hire an interior designer. If you have a high-end primary bath, try matching the look and feel in other bathrooms throughout the home. In Los Angeles, for example, you might pay $18,000 for a job you could do for $14,000 or less in a different state. Where you live, though, could impact the price you pay. Remodeling a small bathroom typically costs up to $6,500, which is slightly lower than the cost of renovating an average-sized bathroom. If you decide to change the layout of your bathroom, like moving a shower or toilet, you’ll pay more for relocating plumbing fixtures. Tile installation and plumbing repairs or replacements will likely require the most labor. Out of your total cost to redo a small bathroom, 40% to 60% will go toward labor. You may opt to just enhance old tile for some remodels and use your fixed budget on other items. For example, if you’re expanding and adding new tile to the space, you’ll need to factor in these prices. Most small full bathrooms measure about 40 square feet, so even 10 or 20 extra square feet will drive up the cost of your small bathroom remodel. Learn about all of the bathroom remodel cost factors below. The size of your space and labor prices matter but so do smaller items like obtaining the necessary permits. Basic hardware sets start at around $40 but could creep into the hundreds for higher-end materials or designs. Additional Accessoriesįaucets, knobs, towel hangers, toilet-paper holders, and other fixtures give life and unique pizzazz to your bathroom. Both the electrical outlet and water supply must be precisely positioned per the manufacturer’s specifications which would add to the cost of the already-pricey item. Some high-end electric motorized toilets can cost upwards of $7,000 and require an electrical outlet in addition to the water supply line in the wall behind the toilet. These start at around $125 and can go up to $500, depending on style, while toilet installation costs about $225 to $550. ToiletĪ functional necessity of all bathroom renovations, many homeowners opt for a basic porcelain toilet. Smaller fixtures, like customized mirrors, towel rails, or toilet paper holders, vary in price but could drive up your bathroom remodel costs if you opt for high-end items. If you're installing a walk-in shower or something a little more fancy, you might pay up to $4,000 for materials alone. For a simple tub and shower setup, this is a good guideline. Installing a new bathtub or shower costs up to $1,000 on average. More high-end options include vessel sinks and artisan-designed sinks, which may exceed $1,000. Porcelain is the most common bathroom sink because it’s cost-effective and looks sleek. Replacing a bathroom sink costs between $480 and $760 on average. Ready-made vanities with their countertops included are more cost effective than fabricating a custom counter and vanity cabinet. You're mostly paying for materials here since an installation in a small bathroom shouldn't take long. More affordable options like laminate or tile cost $10 to $40 per square foot. High-end options like quartz, crushed glass, and natural stone cost anywhere from $40 to $200 per square foot. Homeowners can choose from a wide array of countertop and vanity options for their small bathroom remodel. When paying for the cost of installing new bathroom flooring, select a flooring material with a high degree of waterproofing and one that will not be too slippery when wet. Paying for new tile is usually more expensive than enhancing old tile and will cost anywhere from $4.75 to $7.25 per square foot. Tile, porcelain, ceramic, and vinyl are all popular flooring options for remodeling a small bathroom. Find hiring guides, material costs, expert advice, how-to's and more.
